perhaps allow a selection of databases to backup/restore - but it would be nice to backup right onto my SD card - save me from having to ever plug the BB into the computer (aside from an OS upgrade).

This would be a great feature to make OS upgrades less painful. If you could store all databases including passwords and serial numbers, then loading the backup after an OS upgrade would be a single step solution.
