So...What are people podcasting?

New postby grey on Thu Mar 26, 2009 9:03 pm

I just bought the latest version of Podtrapper and I'm very happy with it. I listen to audio books most of the day and love the bookmarking. Now that I have this, I'm wondering what I might want to use the podcast function for? Do you all watch TV shows (like CSI or 30 Rock) or do they only podcast PBS/news show stuff, or am I really confused and you only use podcast to listen to shows because podcast don't have video? Basically, I'm a podcast idiot...tell me what you like to use it for.

Thanks,

Grey

"Podcast" usually refers to an audio recording. If video, it's usually distinctly referred to as a "Video podcast" or "Vodcast".

I spend a lot of time in the car on my commute. I use podcasts to keep up on news, and for entertainment.

There are tons of podcasts out there serving a wide variety of interests, since the barrier-to-entry on starting a podcast is so low. You can use the built-in podcast directory on podtrapper to find some, or you can use iTunes (my preferred method, since the iTunes store is well-organized), or search your favorite sites to see if they have podcasts. Here are some of my favorites:
-Engadget podcast
-NPR hourly news podcasts
-NPR Car Talk
-NPR Science Friday
-NPR Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!
-Point of Inquiry
-Scientific American
-Skepticality
-Onion Radio News
-The Skeptics Guide to the Universe
-WNYC's Radio Lab

This may or may not provide a good starting point, depending on your interests. If you want links to any and can't find them yourself, let me know and I'll post them. They should all be available in the directory if you search by name, but I find the directory difficult to navigate. Getting the URL through iTunes is not straightforward if you don't know what you're looking for.

If you want video, those are out there as well (NOVA has some interesting ones). Video support on the blackberry is inconsistent. I found myself unsubscribing from my video podcasts when I switched to blackberry+podtrapper. I don't think this is the fault of podtrapper, but a shortcoming of the blackberry itself, since podtrapper uses the built-in media player. So expect that some video podcasts will not play.
HTC Droid Incredible 2
Verizon Wireless
Android 2.3.3
Podtrapper 3.0.20

...Wow, Didn't really realize I listened to that many. Especially taking into mind that 3 of them are 30 minute Daily shows each, and the rest of the weeklies are 1-2 hours depending on the show. The weird thing is, I typically never have a back log of more than 3 days or so, which I get through over the weekend. I've never deleted a podcast because I had to 'catch up'. Download them all OTA through Sprint, right at the edge of 5GB per month. I also have an Audible.con subscription but usually don't have time to listen to books too, I have 3 or 4 books sitting on my BB waiting to be listened to.

I spend a lot of time in a vehicle and I play back from my Storm through the Soundfly BT FM transmitter to my radio through Bluetooth. It also allows my to make and take calls through the radio and a supplied microphone. The call quality is excellent and the music and pod-casts also sound great. I'm about to cancel my Sirius account because I now have effectively a Tivo for my Radio! Podtraper has made my Blackberry my main entertainment/education/and communications center!

Thanks Marcus!
