Config Backup with Encryption Enabled on MicroSD?

New postby MrSimmonsSr on Wed Apr 28, 2010 2:26 pm

Is there some secret to getting the restore of config data to work? I've tried everything I can think of. Every time I install a new OS on my Bold 9000 I have to reinstall my PodTrapper and it never sees any of my backed up configurations..

Aha!! While writing this note I realized it might have something to do with the fact that my IT department forces encryption on my MicroSD card. I did some experimenting and confirmed it..

I connected my device to Media Manager and copied an unencrypted version of my config backup onto my PC, unencrypted. (Media Manager enables this) Then connected again in mass storage mode and copied into the proper place on my MicroSD card, deleting the old version with the .rem extension. Next time I cranked PodTrapper up (after an install of a new OS today) it immediately detected my backup and let me restore it sweet!!

Always wondered why that didn't work.. Think you could add that to your next upgrade? To make it work with an encrypted version as well?

Thanks!

I'll have to try that out. I've been meaning to look into the .rem thing, but just haven't had a chance.

Not yet, it's still waiting on the android port to finish (all new features are). Soon, really :)

So it appears possible, *if* the file was made on the same device. Is that generally the case that you're after? (The encrypted files are device specific it seems)

Yes, that is exactly the case I'm looking to solve. I usually do a regular OS upgrade about once every 3 or 4 weeks, and so have to install PodTrapper again after each OS upgrade. (I'm a sucker for the latest Willboy Hybrids at Driphter.com)

The way I work around this now is that I just load the "Roxio Media Manager" on my PC and copy a decrypted version of the file onto my PC.. Then I disconnect and reconnect my Blackberry in Mass Storage Mode and copy the decrypted version back into the proper spot on my MicroSD card..

Would be nice if it "just worked".. If you no what I mean..

Not a huge deal, but more of a "nice to have" at this point.

Thanks for your consideration, Sir!

Don't guess you've had time to think about this one much, eh, Marcus?

Sorry, I should have mentioned. So the issue here is that the encrypted files aren't always readable by the new install (the keys differ). I'm looking into detecting that case, but right now it has a tendency to freak stuff out.
