Podtrapper won't start after Bold OS upgrade to 4.6.0.217

New postby Tom Munch on Wed Jan 07, 2009 9:16 am

I just upgraded my Bold OS last night to 4.6.0.127. Podtrapper won't start. I tried reinstalling with no more luck other than triggering the Permissions settings.

When I click on the app icon it freezes the screen until I push the phone End key if that helps.

I did an uninstall & reinstall & it still won't open. Looks I'll have to downgrade?

Um, I'd say don't downgrade just for PodTrapper. I'm not sure what exactly is broken, but I should be able to find out.

So you were able to get the permissions screen to come up but resetting the permissions? If so that means it's running, just hanging up on some piece of data somewhere. Worst case scenario I could add a check and then pop a menu saying data is corrupt somewhere, and ask if you want to purge.

Let me put some try/catches in the code and I'll deploy a beta and let you know when it's out there. (Though it may not be until tomorrow).

Sorry for the inconvenience...

It's okay. I'm using a beta OS that might have bad code in it that messes up PodTrapper. I didn't expect you to fix it, but I appreciate anything you do. I should probably try an earlier version to see if it's okay on that one.

I haven't seen much talk here about what OS versions people are running. Have you seen much indication in the logs you've been sent?

Unfortunately the platform I target for widest reach (4.2.1) doesn't have a mechanism for me to reliably tell what OS someone is on. (That wasn't added until 4.3). So I don't really know what OSes people are on until I ask :)

At any rate, regardless of OS, PodTrapper should never fail to start, it should at the very least report what functionality is missing/broken and continue along as best as possible, so I'm definitely interested to see where the issue is for you.

I just put out a beta here:
http://ota.versatilemonkey.com/versions/1.5.12/

The only change here is a ton of error checking during startup, if you get an error, please post it here and it'll help me narrow down where the issue is.

Thanks for taking the time to do this, Marcus.

Okay, I just loaded & rebooted. It went through the permissions screens & is now hung after the save showing "Please Wait..."

I'm waiting... It just powered down. I turned it back on. "Please Wait..."

It powered down again. I'm trying to push buttons to exit. It's frozen. Nothing will get it out. Doing a battery pull. Ug.

That's interesting. I don't have a dialog that says "Please wait..." :)

I think that's the dialog that appears when saving permissions, so it could be that's what's getting hung up, and not podtrapper?

Can you set the permissions all to "Allow" manually before launching and see what podtrapper does?

I think it's crashing when it tries to launch PodTrapper after saving permissions. I set all to allow & then tried starting PodTrapper. The system is hung on the icon & won't allow any button pushes anywhere. Doing a battery pull again.

I'm still considering just downgrading to a previous OS.

Let me know what you'd like me to do, Marcus.

If you want to wait until this weekend I can pump out one that will do popups after every step so we can see where it's failing... Let me know.

Hey Tom,

I just barely finished a working release for this weekend, so I didn't get a chance to put out a special version. If you're ever on AIM, however, and want to work through some stuff I can be reached as 'h00zle'.

Otherwise I'll reply to this thread when I've got something to test with.

Hey Marcus,

I see another user was having trouble on his Bold & that you gave him 1.61. I'm installing that & seeing if it works right now.

Marcus,

It started with 1.61, but I got this error:

"I'm sorry, there was an error checking your registration status: java.lang.ClassCastException/null"

Hey Tom, good to hear (not that it's still broken, but at least that I know where to look now).

I'll get a fix in for that.

Marcus,

I have good news. I had read that there were problems with the Media Player with version 4.6.0.217, so I downgraded to 4.6.0.216. Guess what? PodTrapper now works fine.

I'm sorry you went to so much work to make 4.6.0.217 work, & I hope that it is useful for diagnosing other problems.

Hope fully this will be the end of this problem for you.

No problem, Tom.

Actually it forced me to implement a better start up mechanism that was needed anyway.
