Desktop Downloading Available!

New postby marwatk on Fri Nov 28, 2008 4:36 pm

With version 1.1.0 and higher it is now possible to do the downloading through your desktop regardless of carrier or device capabilities.

Simply install this application on your system: http://ota.versatilemonkey.com/Podtrapper%20Desktop%20Downloader%20Setup.exe

Once it's installed and running a small icon will sit in your system tray. When you connect your Blackberry via USB (and maybe bluetooth?) the application will detect your it, and PodTrapper will use your computer's network connection for downloading.

Keep in mind that this isn't necessary for anyone with a wifi device or whose provider allows for unlimited file size for over the air downloads.

Let me know what you think! (And if it doesn't work for anyone).

Hi skibota,

That generally means that Podtrapper isn't running on the device itself. Let me know if that's the case in your situation, if not we'll investigate what it could be.

Hi libuff,

Unfortunately no, I don't have the development environment to work on Macs, or would even know where to begin :)

I won't say it's never going to happen, but not likely any time soon... sorry :(

I just had to say well done for providing this option. I just moved from an 8820 to an 8310, hence losing my WiFi capabilities, and if this option works for me I'll be buying your podcast app shortly. Downloading the trial now to give is a shot.

Thanks! I'll provide feedback..

Marwatk, any chance you'll have support for encrypted media cards anytime soon? I can't try it out until it works with encrypted media cards since my company enforces encryption as a BES policy.. Darn!

Please let me know your thoughts..

Thanks for all your hard work on this app! It looks very nice!

Um... Good point. You can't really, from the desktop, which I should probably fix.

You can on the bberry, though, by choosing 'View Downloads'. You can then choose 'View failed' or 'View succeeded' to see those sets.

Or, you can send your logs over (via Email Developer on 1.6.5+).

I have a download package and I have been using the desktop app while I charge my phone. Is there any speed advantage to this? I assumed there would be, but I am not sure how to tell if a pod cast is being dled with the desktop app or the cell network.

Generally your desktop will be much faster than the cell network downloads. Unfortunately there's no way (other than seeing if the little arrows that indicate cell traffic are going) to see how PodTrapper is downloading, but I've added a todo to add some indication somewhere.

Hi Duffy, I ran into that last week myself during some testing. It happens when the remote server is either down or not known (a timeout or dns error will cause it). There's a bug in the desktop download that doesn't allow it to recover after that happens, so it needs to be closed and restarted to start working again.

It's on my todo list, but I haven't had a chance to fix it yet.

Just sits there and gives no errors. Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong?

Thanks!

Hi Brian,

That happens when the BB Device Manager gets out of whack. You may be able to fix it by exiting both PodTrapper (via Menu-Exit) and the desktop app and reopening both, but usually it requires a reboot of the PC. Sorry I don't have a better answer for you :(

I installed Desktop Downloader on my home PC. When DD runs, it just displays the message "Invalid Pointer" in the log. I don't get prompted for my password (like at work), and PT doesn't seen to recognize that DD is connected.

I do not have BB Desktop Manager installed on my home PC.

Any suggestions?

That's probably it. I didn't think to mention that before, but it requires the desktop manager (it's the only way to communicate with the BB over USB).

Thanks for bringing that up, I'll add it to the docs.

Thanks,

Hi Todd,

No, it can't. Though I have a way to do that in mind, it's probably going to be a while. Right now it needs mass storage mode disabled to be able to download via the desktop app.

You can set it to prompt, though, so that you can turn it on when necessary and leave it off when not (though it's not an optimal solution).

hi markus. i saw you ask what kind of proxy earlier in this thread. i'm just on a straight http proxy, no user/password required. maybe you could implement that initially just to test that the basics are working, then add socks and passwords and whatnot. since that won't require me to wipe my device, i'm happy to test it for you. ;)

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has tried the desktop app with Windows 7 x64? I can't get it to run, I have tried every 'compatibility mode' option available and when PT opens it just says "connection advice is unavailable (next line) invalid pointer" and it just continues saying "invalid pointer" after that. If I go back into my XP partition it works just fine.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

I haven't tried any of the 64bit stuff, but my original development was done in Windows 7, so it shouldn't be an OS thing. (And afaik it works in Vista 64, so it shouldn't be a 64 bit thing). It could be the combination of both, though. Usually 'invalid pointer' happens when the desktop manager software isn't installed. Is that the case?

Oh man how stupid of me, that was the problem! I installed DM and it seems to be working just fine. I had to set capability mode to vista and then it loaded up just fine. It seems to take about a minute hanging at "Client successfully connected" before it starts to update which is kind of odd. Thanks for helping my stupidity!

Then it goes on to the next podcast. I was watching and it was downloading just fine right before the failure.

Has this problem been fixed since 2.1.4? Haven't been following the forum or the betas for a few weeks (got married, honeymoon, moved to a new place). I'll try the beta anyway, but I just want to note that I've been having the same issue with this feed (NYT: Science Times). Hasn't been an issue yet, since its only on recent episodes and I'm still way behind on my podcasts.
